How to write a book review
Writing a book review might seem a bit challenging, especially for those who haven’t done it before. Especially when you have high expectations for what you write.
You might be thinking, will anyone believe what I write? Can my review convince them?
Don’t worry – you can share your thoughts on what you’ve just read by writing a book review. By reviewing a book, you can share your perspective on the story, characters, and writing style.

1. Write the Book’s Identification
Start by writing the book’s identification, such as the author’s name, the number of pages, the publication date, and the author’s profile.
The book’s identification can also describe its essence and characteristics. You can outline the major storylines. However, avoid going into too much detail.
As this is just an introduction, craft sentences that can engage readers, making them ask, “Why should I read this review?” and “Why should I read this book?”
All these questions will be answered in the opening paragraph. Convince them by delivering an intriguing message.
2. Share What You Liked
After introducing the book’s overview, it’s time to share the parts you enjoyed the most.
This part can be somewhat challenging yet easy, as there’s likely much you want to convey. To help you, here are some points to address:
- Who is your favorite character?
- What are your reasons for liking that character?
- Do you feel a connection with that character?
- What scene do you remember the most?
- Which part is your favorite?
- Did the book make you laugh or cry?
- Does the book make you want to keep reading?
Try answering these questions one by one. Eventually, you’ll find yourself writing fluidly. Before you know it, you’ve written several paragraphs.
3. Write What You Didn’t Like
Every work has parts you like and parts you don’t. Now, discuss what you didn’t like about the book.
Are there aspects of the book that you dislike? Such as the writing style or theme. Do you dislike the ending? What were your expectations for the book’s ending?
4. Discuss the Author’s Writing Style
In addition to the story’s content, you can also include how the author conveys the story in the book review. Typically, each author has a unique style or characteristic.
You can express your opinion on how the author portrays each scene or character depiction in the book. Furthermore, you can comment on the language style used.
5. Draw a Conclusion
From the above points, you already have numerous paragraphs describing the content of the book you’ve read. It’s time to write a conclusion.
You can fill it with your initial impressions after completing the reading. Then, convey the message you gained from the book.
6. Provide a Rating
The final and equally important part is giving a rating. You can assign a rating that appropriately represents the book.
The higher the rating you give, the more people might be enticed to read the book you’ve reviewed. Ensure that the rating you provide is fair and honest.
